Poland: Petition calls for end to Sunday trading ban

A petition has been submitted to the Polish government proposing the abolition of the current Sunday trading ban. The author, identified as a citizen and employee in the logistics and retail sector, addressed the appeal directly to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, calling for urgent legislative action or labor code reforms.

The proposal suggests that Sunday trading could benefit the economy and increase VAT revenues, provided that strict protections are in place for workers. To prevent exploitation, the petitioner demands a statutory guarantee that employees working weekends or in shift cycles receive two consecutive days off. This would ensure a continuous block of rest consisting of at least 48 hours of free time plus 11 hours of daily rest, totaling a minimum of 59 uninterrupted hours.

The Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy is expected to respond to the proposal by November 5, 2026.
