Poland Sejm passes new alcohol sales and advertising restrictions

The Polish Sejm has passed an amendment to the Act on Upbringing in Sobriety and Counteracting Alcoholism, introducing sweeping changes to alcohol sales and promotion. Scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, the law mandates a nationwide ban on retail alcohol sales between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. However, certain establishments, including restaurants, hotels, bars, and airports, are exempt from this nighttime restriction.

In addition to sales limits, the legislation imposes a total ban on the advertising and promotion of all alcoholic beverages, including beer. While most restrictions apply from 2027, beer advertising may continue under current rules until December 31, 2027. Violations of the advertising ban carry heavy penalties, including fines ranging from 30,000 PLN to 1 million PLN or potential restrictions of liberty.

The amendment also includes provisions to double alcohol license fees and introduces stricter age verification requirements for sellers. The law has faced criticism from political figures like Sławomir Mentzen, who argues the regulations could stifle the development of craft breweries and favor large international corporations.
