Poland plans updates to national deposit recycling system

The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment is developing updates to the national deposit system to better protect consumers and expand recycling coverage. One primary proposal involves extending the minimum validity period of vouchers issued by bottle return machines from the current 30 days to 90 days. This change aims to prevent customers from losing money due to short expiration windows.

Additionally, the Ministry is working on expanding the system to include single-use glass packaging, such as small alcohol bottles. Officials indicated that a transition period of approximately two years would be provided to allow for these changes.

The current deposit system, which has been in effect since October 1, 2025, covers plastic bottles up to 3 liters and metal cans up to 1 liter. As of January 1, 2026, it also includes reusable glass bottles up to 1.5 liters. Large retail stores are required to participate in the system, while participation for smaller outlets remains voluntary.
