Poland positioned as a major EU gas hub while EU pushes electricity transition

Poland is set to expand its role as a regional gas transit hub. The country plans to operate three LNG regasification terminals by 2030, including a second FSRU in Gdańsk, giving a total capacity of over 20 billion m³ of natural gas per year. In 2025, Gaz‑System recorded a record domestic‑system export of 2 billion m³, almost entirely to Ukraine, while cross‑border flows to Slovakia and Lithuania remain minimal. The growth is driven by the EU’s aim to eliminate Russian gas imports by the end of 2027 and sustained demand for gas in Central‑Eastern Europe.

At the same time, the European Commission will present a plan to accelerate the electrification of the EU economy. The strategy targets a share of electricity in final energy consumption of about 50 % by 2040. Poland currently lags behind, with electricity accounting for roughly 17 % of its final energy use, compared with the EU average of 23 %. Experts call for coordinated governance and more ambitious targets to close the gap.

These developments underline Poland’s emerging importance in the EU’s broader energy transition, linking gas‑based supply security with the push toward greater electricity use.
