European agriculture faces potato shortages and livestock trade hurdles

The European agricultural sector is facing significant volatility across several key commodities. A looming potato shortage is expected as major producers like Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands reduce planting areas by approximately 14% following a period of oversupply and subsequent extreme weather. This supply crunch is expected to impact markets in Romania and elsewhere.

In the livestock sector, the European Commission is working to resolve technical legislative barriers that prevent Romanian sheep and goat exports from resuming normally. While active outbreaks of small ruminant peste (PMR) have subsided, the Commission aims to modify rules so that vaccination programs do not trigger long-term trade restrictions.

Additionally, potato producers in Poland have reported challenges with yields due to drought and high temperatures, while some Polish exports to Germany are reportedly being relabeled as Czech to bypass existing trade barriers. Meanwhile, sunflower prices in Constanța, Romania, have seen slight declines amid regional supply pressures and high import demand from Turkey.
