Poland: Practical guidance for All Saints' Day and cemetery management
As All Saints' Day approaches in Poland, several practical matters regarding cemetery visits and funeral management have become notable.
In terms of floral trends, while chrysanthemums remain the most popular choice for grave decorations due to their durability and symbolism, hydrangeas are seeing increased popularity. To ensure hydrangeas last until November 1, they require a drying process lasting approximately three weeks.
Regarding legal and financial aspects, individuals who have financed a funeral can request reimbursement directly from the deceased person's bank account. Under Article 55 of the Banking Law, banks are obligated to pay documented funeral costs to the person who provided them, even if that person is not a legal heir. This procedure applies to savings and checking accounts and does not require waiting for formal inheritance proceedings.
Additionally, families are advised to check the status of graves that have been in use for 20 years. According to the Act on Cemeteries and Burial, a grave may be repurposed for another burial after 20 years unless a reservation is filed and the required fee is paid. Maintaining the grave physically does not replace the necessity of fulfilling these administrative requirements at the cemetery office.
