Poland prepares for August solar eclipse and moon‑Mars conjunction

On 12 August 2024 a partial solar eclipse will sweep across Poland, with the greatest obscuration—up to 85 % of the Sun’s disc—expected in the north‑west and western regions. The eclipse will be visible from about 18:00 to 20:40 local time, reaching its maximum around 19:20‑19:30. Experts advise using ISO 12312‑certified eclipse glasses, as ordinary sunglasses or photographic film do not provide adequate protection.

Earlier in the month, on the night of 6‑7 August, the Moon will pass close to the planet Mars just before dawn, creating a striking “Moon‑Mars conjunction.” The phenomenon will be visible from roughly 04:15 to 04:45 depending on the region, with the best views away from city lights. No special equipment is required; observers can watch with the naked eye. Both events coincide with the annual Perseid meteor shower, offering Polish sky‑watchers a busy week of astronomical highlights.
