Poland preschool enrollment: sanitary rules and rights

As approximately 200,000 three-year-olds in Poland begin preschool education, questions have arisen regarding the rights of institutions to refuse enrollment based on sanitary conditions.

According to preschool teacher Magdalena Gajewska, kindergarten directors may legally refuse a child who still uses diapers if the facility lacks the necessary sanitary infrastructure, such as disinfected changing tables. In many cases, changing occurs standing up in toilets to maintain the child's dignity, but a lack of proper equipment can lead to enrollment denials.

Demographic data from Statistics Poland suggests this influx of children born in 2023 will significantly impact the preschool system. While the Ministry of National Education is expected to provide exact enrollment figures later in September, the transition marks a major milestone for families and educational facilities across the country.
