Poland preserves medieval architectural and military heritage
Poland maintains a significant collection of medieval structures, ranging from urban centers to remote mountain fortifications. Toruń, a UNESCO World Heritage site, serves as a primary example of Gothic architecture. The city features well-preserved brick buildings, a grand Gothic town hall in the Market Square, and defensive walls that reflect its prosperous history as part of the Hanseatic League.
In the southwest, the Bolcz castle in the Rudawy Janowickie mountains offers a different perspective on the nation's turbulent military history. Built in 1345 by Bolko II Mały, the castle was shaped by various conflicts, including the Hussite wars and a Swedish siege in 1645. After passing through Prussian hands and serving as an inn, the site is now managed by the State Forest Holding and remains a popular destination for hikers.
