Poland promotes summer fruits and vegetables for heart health amid regional berry price differences
Polish health experts recommend five seasonal foods to help manage high blood pressure during the summer. Beets provide nitrates that convert to nitric oxide, aiding vessel dilation; tomatoes offer potassium and lycopene; berries such as blueberries, raspberries and blackberries supply antioxidants and polyphenols; celery and carrots add potassium, magnesium, and fiber. These items are suggested as supplements to, not replacements for, medication and should be incorporated into a balanced diet.
At the same time, Polish markets report notable price variation for wild forest berries. In the north‑west (West Pomeranian Voivodeship) prices can reach up to 50 zł per litre, while central and southern cities like Radom, Kraków and Poznań see around 30 zł, and the cheapest berries are found in Silesia and Subcarpathia at under 20 zł per litre. The peak harvest is expected in early July, after which supplies should increase and prices may fall. Collecting berries is permitted in public forests for personal use, provided it is done by hand and avoided in protected reserves.
Both pieces highlight the nutritional value of seasonal produce and underscore the importance of informed consumption for cardiovascular health.
