Poland proposes permanent driving license revocation for violators

The Polish Ministry of Justice has prepared a draft amendment to ten different road traffic laws aimed at increasing road safety. The Council of Ministers has accepted the document, which has now been sent to the Sejm.

A primary goal of the regulation is to crack down on drivers who ignore court-ordered driving bans. Police statistics indicate that over 16,000 drivers in Poland drive in violation of such bans annually. Under the proposed rules, offenders could face permanent revocation of their driving licenses, seizure of their vehicles, and a mandatory financial penalty of at least 10,000 PLN.

Concerns have been raised by experts regarding the scope of these penalties. Currently, certain technical violations—such as driving in contact lenses when a license mandates corrective glasses—can result in a six-month driving ban and a 1,500 PLN fine, as they are legally treated as driving without valid qualifications.
