Poland proposes new limits on tax authorities' access to bank accounts

A new legislative project in Poland aims to restrict the ability of the National Revenue Administration to access citizens' bank account information without prior legal justification. Currently, tax authorities can access data even before a person is officially designated as a suspect in a crime or offense.

The proposed changes would require authorities to obtain permission from a district court to access banking data in cases where an individual does not yet hold suspect status. This move follows long-standing concerns from Mirosław Wróblewski, President of the Personal Data Protection Office, regarding the scope of powers held by tax authorities.

The Public Finance Committee has recommended that the Sejm pass the project, though the final form of the regulations remains subject to further parliamentary work.
