Poland proposes new minimum kennel size regulations for dogs
The Polish Ministry of Agriculture is consulting on new regulations regarding minimum kennel sizes for dogs, intended to support the upcoming July 2027 ban on keeping dogs on chains. Under the proposed draft, minimum kennel areas would range from 4 to 10 square meters, depending on the dog's height at the withers. Specifically, dogs under 40 cm would require 4 square meters, while those over 70 cm would require 10 square meters. For multiple animals in one kennel, the area would increase by 50 percent per additional animal, and the space occupied by a doghouse would not count toward the required minimum.
Minister of Agriculture Stefan Krajewski stated that while subsidies for building kennels have not been ruled out, such support can only be implemented once specific requirements are finalized. The consultation period for these regulations is set to run until October 7.
Animal welfare organizations have criticized the proposal, arguing that the dimensions should be based on scientific knowledge of animal welfare rather than just physical height. They advocate for regulations that consider behavioral needs, movement, and environmental conditions. The Ministry is currently reviewing these comments and has not ruled out potential changes to the draft.
