Poland proposes new waste disposal rules for solar panels and batteries

The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment has prepared a draft amendment to waste law and the BDO system to implement EU directives and tighten environmental regulations.

The proposal introduces new requirements for foreign online retailers selling batteries and accumulators, including those for energy storage, directly to Polish consumers. These companies will be required to appoint an authorized representative in Poland. Failure to comply may result in fines ranging from 10,000 to 500,000 PLN.

Additionally, the draft clarifies the financing of photovoltaic panel disposal. For domestic panels introduced to the market since January 1, 2016, the responsibility for financing their management lies with the entity that introduced the equipment into the market. Some provisions are expected to take effect 14 days after announcement, while others are slated for January 1, 2027.
