Poland plans security reforms for schools including shooting and drone training
The Polish Ministry of National Education and the Institute of Educational Research (IBE) are proposing significant reforms to the Education for Safety (EdB) curriculum. The new program aims to shift from theoretical learning to practical training, including shooting with firearms at professional ranges, responding to drone threats, and preparing 72-hour survival kits. Students would also practice using gas masks and defibillators.
In addition to curriculum changes, the Ministry is introducing a regulation requiring schools to conduct mandatory evacuation drills at least twice a year. To enhance immediate security, school directors may receive expanded rights to inspect student belongings and secure potentially dangerous items following recent incidents involving knife attacks.
However, the proposals face criticism from educators and local governments. Concerns include the lack of funding for specialized equipment, the need for teachers to obtain professional shooting licenses, and the logistical burden on municipalities. The Commissioner for Human Rights has also urged the Ministry to focus on systemic mental health support to prevent crises before they occur.
