Poland proposes salary increases for beginning teachers

The Polish Ministry of National Education has proposed amendments to the Teacher's Charter to ensure higher salary growth for beginning teachers starting in 2027. The plan involves a technical change to the indicator used to calculate the average salary of novice educators.

Currently, the indicator is set at 120 percent of the base amount. The proposed amendment would increase this to 122.7696 percent. While described as a technical adjustment, the Ministry notes it has significant financial implications. Between 2024 and 2026, higher wages for beginning teachers were maintained through annual budget regulations; however, without this legislative change, the mechanism would cease to function in 2027, causing wage growth for this group to lag behind more experienced teachers.

By enshrining this change in the Teacher's Charter, the government aims to allow beginning teachers to receive raises at the same rate as appointed and diploma-level teachers. Projections suggest that with this change, the average salary for a beginning teacher in 2027 would reach 7,078.65 PLN gross, whereas without the amendment, it would be approximately 6,918.96 PLN gross.
