Poland prepares to host permanent U.S. military base

Poland is preparing to host a permanent United States military base, a move that could cost the Polish taxpayer between 11 and 17 billion dollars. Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka confirmed that the Polish government is ready to finance the project and is currently drafting the necessary legislation. The facility is expected to accommodate approximately 5,000 soldiers and could become operational by 2029. A final decision is anticipated in early December following a strategic review of U.S. military presence in Europe.

Public opinion in Poland shows strong support for the initiative, with a recent United Surveys by IBRiS poll indicating that 88.6 percent of respondents favor the establishment of a permanent U.S. base. While the majority support the base, there is political division regarding the proposed name ‘Fort Trump,’ a suggestion made by Polish President Karol Nawrocki. Only 7 percent of those surveyed expressed opposition to the base's creation.

In a related development, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker highlighted Poland as a leader in defense spending within the alliance, noting that the country is projected to allocate nearly 5 percent of its GDP to defense this year.
