Poland pushes for digital sovereignty amid EU tech push

Deputy Minister of Digitisation Dariusz Standerski told a forum in Katowice that Poland needs true digital sovereignty, warning that US and Chinese big‑tech firms dominate the market and limit consumer choice. He argued that without a single EU market, Polish companies face 26 different regulatory regimes, hindering growth. Standerski called the situation an "oligopoly" and said technology has a nationality, urging the EU to diversify and support home‑grown alternatives.

A European Commission report released shortly after highlighted progress in the EU’s digital decade but warned the pace remains insufficient. While 96.8% of households have basic 5G, fibre‑to‑the‑home and advanced AI adoption lag behind. The EU aims to double its share of the global semiconductor market by 2030 and reduce dependence on non‑EU cyber‑security providers. Public surveys show strong support for a digitally independent Europe, with most citizens willing to pay more for European services that guarantee security and data protection. The Commission plans to boost coordinated investments and update national strategies to accelerate digital infrastructure and AI regulation.

Both statements stress that achieving digital sovereignty is seen as essential for economic security, consumer rights, and the EU’s strategic autonomy.
