Poland pushes for permanent U.S. military base

Poland’s head of the National Security Office, Bartosz Grodecki, says a window of opportunity has opened for a permanent U.S. military base on Polish soil. He outlined the steps Poland must take – securing financing, drafting a special law, selecting a location, preparing a schedule and presenting the offer to Washington – after the U.S. asked for a proposal and the Ministry of Defence sent a letter of intent.

Grodecki estimates the project will cost at least several billion zlotys and could be completed within two to three years. He stresses that a permanent U.S. presence is a key element of Poland’s security posture and a political signal to Russia and Belarus, while noting that current assessments do not indicate an imminent conventional war.

The plan involves lobbying on both sides of the Atlantic and developing dual‑use technologies, including a domestic drone programme, to support the base’s construction and operation.
