Poland's renewable energy projects blend solar, wind and heat innovations with agriculture

A solar farm at Volkswagen Poznań’s Września plant uses 100 Wielkopolska sheep to graze beneath 31,000 photovoltaic panels, providing about 25% of the factory’s electricity and serving as a research site for animal welfare and ecosystem impacts. Quanta Energy and the University of Life Sciences in Poznań are studying soil, micro‑climate and pasture quality.

Orchard growers are adopting agrophotovoltaic systems to cut electricity costs and generate new revenue streams. According to Maciej Kozarzewski of Polskie Jagody, the technology is ready, but legal and administrative reforms are needed to enable full investment.

Wind farms are delivering measurable fiscal benefits to local municipalities. In Potęgowo, the largest Polish wind farm contributes roughly 4.6 million zł annually – about 6‑7% of the gmina’s budget – while Margonin receives about 6 million zł each year, funding infrastructure and public services.

German firm Prinz Thermotechnik GmbH has developed sand‑based heat‑storage units that capture excess solar power at up to 500 °C, offering a high‑temperature, long‑duration heat source for farms, homes and industry. The system can store heat for months, outperforming water‑based storage in temperature range and storage duration.
