Poland railway safety report shows rise in fatalities

A report from the Office of Rail Transport (UTK) indicates a rise in fatalities on the Polish railway network. In 2025, 175 people died in railway-related incidents, compared to 163 the previous year.

Of these fatalities, 52 occurred at level crossings and railway crossings, representing a nearly 24 percent increase in deaths at these locations compared to 2024. The report notes that 186 accidents occurred at crossings in 2025, an 8.8 percent increase from the previous year.

Data shows that the majority of fatalities—118 individuals—were unauthorized persons on railway property, while 52 victims were users of level crossings. The report highlights systemic issues, including failures by infrastructure manager PKP PLK to implement previous safety recommendations and organizational irregularities at crossing stations.
