Poland recommends 225 kHz radio frequency for emergency communications

The Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA), in coordination with the Ministry of National Defence and the Government Security Centre, has included battery-powered or crank radios in its official safety guide for crisis preparedness.

Authorities highlight the 225 kHz longwave frequency used by Polskie Radio Program 1 as a vital information source. This frequency provides coverage across Poland and remains accessible during prolonged power outages, internet failures, or cellular network disruptions caused by floods, storms, energy failures, or military threats.

Officials note that while smartphones may remain charged, they become ineffective if data services fail. Residents are advised to keep a radio with its own power source and to tune in for instructions regarding shelter, evacuation, or other emergency measures upon hearing alarm sirens. It is noted that 225 kHz is not a dedicated emergency-only channel, but a standard broadcast frequency used for general information including government updates.
