Poland records low electric car fire rates while EV and plug‑in hybrid fleet tops 300,000

Data from the quarterly EV Fire Safety Report show that in the first half of 2026 Poland experienced 26 fires involving electric vehicles, compared with 4,935 fires of gasoline‑powered cars. When adjusted for fleet size, the fire rate was 0.168 per 1,000 electric cars versus 0.201 per 1,000 gasoline cars, indicating a lower risk for EVs. The electric fleet grew by about 57 % in the same period, rising from roughly 99,000 to almost 155,000 registered units, and 46.2 % of EV incidents involved the traction battery.

Registration figures released for June 2026 reveal a total of 304,353 battery‑electric (BEV) and plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles on Polish roads. BEVs numbered 154,041 and PHEVs 150,312, making the two groups almost equal. June saw an increase of 10,980 EV‑type cars, a 34.6 % year‑on‑year jump, driven largely by PHEVs (+6,848, 62.4 % of the growth) while BEVs added 4,132 units. In the first half of the year, 57,116 new EV‑type registrations were recorded, with PHEVs accounting for 60.6 % of those. Despite the rapid growth, electrically powered cars still represent a small fraction of Poland’s 20 million‑vehicle fleet.
