Poland Rejects Ukraine’s Plan to Name Unit after UPA Heroes

Polish National Security Bureau chief Bartosz Grodecki said Poland will not accept Ukraine’s historical narrative that questions the number of Poles killed in the Volhynian massacre, relativises the crime, or glorifies its perpetrators. He called the Ukrainian president’s decision to name a special‑operations unit after “heroes of the UPA” a “strategic mistake” and stressed that Poland’s position is “hard and uncompromising”, leaving no room for negotiation.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine will open state security archives concerning the Volhynian crimes and allow exhumation work, presenting the move as a step toward confronting historical truth. The dispute surfaced during the NATO summit in Ankara, where Grodecki reiterated Poland’s refusal to accept the Ukrainian historical policy.
