Poland reports sharp rise in Lyme disease and hepatitis A cases

Polish health authorities said that in the past month 2,939 new Lyme disease infections were confirmed, a 65 % increase and bringing the 2026 total to 7,448 cases. The National Institute of Public Health (PZH) warned that tick activity now starts at temperatures as low as 5‑7 °C, extending the risk period and making early removal of ticks crucial.

The Chief Sanitary Inspector, Paweł Grzesiowski, also reported a four‑fold rise in hepatitis A infections, with 1,413 cases recorded by mid‑July compared with 364 a year earlier. The surge is linked to food‑service venues and higher‑risk groups, prompting intensified inspections and calls for targeted vaccination campaigns.
