Poland road safety: Rules for overtaking cyclists on double continuous lines

Drivers in Poland face legal risks when attempting to overtake cyclists on roads marked with a double continuous line. While the line itself does not strictly prohibit overtaking, it forbids vehicles from crossing or driving over it.

To legally overtake a cyclist under these conditions, a driver must ensure they do not touch the line and maintain a minimum safety distance of at least one meter. On many single-lane roads, the lane width is insufficient to accommodate both a car and a cyclist without crossing the line, meaning drivers must wait for a broken line section. Overtaking is also prohibited if visibility is poor, such as near curves or hills, or if the cyclist has signaled an intention to turn.
