Poland school dietary changes spark political debate and disinformation

The introduction of the ‘planetary diet’ in Polish schools has sparked significant controversy and debates regarding nutrition and disinformation. MEP Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik has criticized Education Minister Barbara Nowacka, alleging that the new dietary guidelines, which emphasize plant-based meals and reduce meat consumption, disregard parental input. Zajączkowska-Hernik cited local data suggesting that a majority of children do not enjoy the new meals and feel unsatisfied. She linked the policy to the Green REV Institute and Sylwia Spurek.

Simultaneously, experts from the NASK Disinformation Analysis Center have reported a surge in false information on social media platforms like X regarding the new diet. Common disinformation narratives include claims that the policy mandates veganism or that it will lead to nutritional deficiencies in children. However, nutritionists, including Baszar El-Helou from the Medical University of Warsaw, have clarified that the planetary diet is not a restrictive vegan diet but a balanced approach that encourages local, seasonal products and reduces highly processed foods without eliminating meat entirely.
