Poland school meal changes spark political and parental dispute

New nutritional guidelines implemented in Polish schools and kindergartens this September have sparked significant controversy. Based on the planetary diet model, the changes emphasize plant-based products, legumes, and whole grains while reducing meat consumption and processed foods to promote health and environmental sustainability.

Parents and students have expressed dissatisfaction, with some describing the new meals as less tasty and unappealing. The transition has also led to increased costs for local governments, which must fund the changes entirely. Some municipalities have raised meal prices by up to 20 PLN per day, potentially costing parents 400 PLN monthly. Additionally, schools face expenses for kitchen upgrades and staff training.

The policy has triggered a political dispute. Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki criticized the changes as “ideological madness” implemented without parental consultation. In response, Education Minister Barbara Nowacka defended the measures, stating that the goal is to combat obesity and promote healthy, balanced eating habits based on local products.
