France riots spark international debate over migration and EU climate policy

Widespread riots in France, driven by rising living costs and social grievances, have drawn sharp international reactions. Leaders including Donald Trump, Péter Magyar, and Donald Tusk have linked the unrest to migration issues. Trump called for France to close its borders, while Magyar stated the violence vindicated Hungary’s strict migration stance. Tusk emphasized that Poland would maintain its own strict asylum and border policies to avoid similar outcomes.

Separately, at the European Council summit, discussions centered on the Emissions Trading System (ETS). While a group of nations including Poland, Italy, and the Visegrád Group pushed for changes to ETS 2—the system intended to cover transport and heating—no formal delays to its 2028 implementation were approved. However, Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that the Council called for a revised assessment of the system’s socio-economic and financial impacts on households and businesses, describing it as a significant first step toward potential future revisions.
