Poland Gets US Green Light for Permanent Military Base

The United States has signaled “green light” approval for converting its rotating force in Poland into a permanent base. Polish presidential minister Marcin Przydacz said Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the proposal “absolutely supportive” and confirmed the U.S. will keep its overall presence, though the halted 4,000‑troop armored brigade rotation has not yet been resumed.

National Security Office chief Bartosz Grodecki added that the pending rotation will be completed and that around 10,000 U.S. troops will ultimately be stationed in Poland. He said the permanent base, expected to cost several billion zlotys, is on the agenda and that “the question of whether the unit will arrive is not questioned at all.”

Former President Donald Trump previously announced an additional 5,000 troops for Poland, a pledge that remains unimplemented pending the rotation decision. Meanwhile, a group of moderate Republican congressmen led by Don Bacon and Brian Fitzpatrick warned they will block a $88 billion defense spending package unless the halted rotation is restored, linking the issue to broader U.S. defense funding.

Pentagon plans to reduce U.S. forces in Europe were also put on hold after Secretary of State Marco Rubio intervened, halting announced cuts by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The debate underscores tensions over NATO burden‑sharing, potential U.S. troop withdrawals, and Poland’s role on NATO’s eastern flank.
