Poland seeks observer status in GCAP sixth-generation fighter program

Poland has received informal authorization to join the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as an observer. This international initiative, led by Japan, the United Kingdom, and Italy, aims to develop sixth-generation combat aircraft.

While observer status provides access to key technical information and allows Poland to evaluate future technologies, it does not currently offer industrial participation or production advantages. This status is similar to the one granted to Canada in July.

The move comes as Poland seeks long-term solutions to replace its aging fleet of 47 F-16 fighter jets, which are expected to reach the end of their operational life within the next decade. While Poland is currently integrating F-35A aircraft and utilizing South Korean FA-50s, the GCAP and the American F-47 are viewed as primary candidates for future requirements following the decline of the European FCAS program.
