Poland seeks permanent G20 membership to represent Central Europe

Poland is actively pursuing permanent membership in the G20, positioning itself as the representative voice for the Central European region. During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Karol Nawrocki emphasized that Poland can contribute its experience as a dynamically developing economy and its successful economic transformation to the group.

Diplomatic reports indicate that Poland's aspirations face opposition from Russia, which is allegedly using its influence over Global South nations to block the bid. Specifically, Russian efforts are said to involve encouraging African states to oppose Polish membership by framing it as a displacement of African representation.

To counter this, Polish diplomacy is engaging with African leaders, including a meeting between President Nawrocki and Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who serves as the chair of the African Union. Poland will attend the G20 summit in Miami this December as a guest following an invitation from the United States.
