Poland seeks rapid conclusion of EU 2028–2034 budget negotiations

The Polish government is seeking to conclude negotiations for the European Union budget for the 2028–2034 period within this year. Deputy Finance Minister Jurand Drob stated that the push for an accelerated timeline is driven by upcoming elections in France, Spain, Italy, and Poland. The goal is to finalize the budget before political shifts in these nations could lead to a legislative deadlock.

The proposed budget is expected to reach nearly 2 trillion euros, comparable to the current seven-year cycle. This total includes funds from member state contributions and the post-pandemic Recovery Plan, for which the European Commission has taken on 750 billion euros in debt.

To fund these expenditures, the EU is considering the implementation of five to seven new own resources, or EU-level taxes, which could generate at least 44 billion euros annually. These measures remain a point of discussion regarding national sovereignty and the centralization of competencies within the European Commission.
