Poland seeks to boost biogas and biomethane output with regulatory reforms and new production data

The Polish Biogas Organization (Polska Organizacja Biometanu) has submitted a package of legislative proposals to the Ministry of Climate and Environment to amend the draft UC118 law. The proposals call for three priority pillars: a stable, long‑term support system for biogas installations above 1 MW, expansion of gas‑network infrastructure with dedicated tariffs, and simplification of administrative and construction procedures. The organisation also seeks easier use of post‑ferment as fertilizer and measures to lower costs for farmers and improve energy independence.

According to data from the National Agricultural Support Centre (KOWR), 209 agricultural biogas plants were operating in Poland by May 2026. In 2025 these plants produced 515.2 million m³ of biogas, generating about 1,080.9 GWh of electricity and over 6.1 million tonnes of post‑ferment. Of the biogas, 482.5 million m³ was used for electricity, while 2.5 thousand m³ of biomethane was injected into the national gas grid.
