Hungarian bus accident kills 12 Polish pilgrims
A fatal bus accident occurred on the M3 highway near Mezőkeresztes, Hungary, on August 16, 2026. The vehicle, carrying 57 to 59 Polish pilgrims returning from Medjugorje, veered off the road and overturned on a steep embankment. The crash resulted in 12 deaths and numerous injuries.
Authorities suspect the accident was caused by the driver falling asleep. The primary driver has been placed in 30-day custody by a Hungarian court on charges of causing a fatal mass accident through negligence. The second driver, who was resting in a soundproofed area of the vehicle at the time of the crash, has provided statements regarding the incident and the condition of the road infrastructure.
Medical repatriation efforts are ongoing. Twelve injured passengers have been transported to hospitals in Rzeszów, Poland, via four Air Ambulance flights. While many have returned home, several individuals remain in Hungarian hospitals in serious condition. The Krosno District Prosecutor's Office in Poland is preparing a request to take over the investigation from Hungarian authorities, as the suspect and all victims are Polish citizens.
