Poland sees 304,000 emergency contraceptive prescriptions in 2026

In 2026, approximately 304,000 prescriptions for emergency contraceptive pills containing ulipristal acetate or levonorgestrel have been issued in Poland. Data indicates that 23,000 of these prescriptions were for teenagers.

Demographic statistics from May to July 2026 show that women aged 19-25 accounted for one-third of those seeking prescriptions at pharmacies. Additionally, 12 percent of purchasers were between 16 and 18 years old, while 1 percent were 15 years old. While individuals aged 14 or younger require parental consent and a doctor's prescription, the introduction of pharmacist-issued prescriptions in May 2024 allows for access through consultation without a medical examination.

Pharmacists are required to conduct consultations in private rooms, but they lack the authority to perform physical examinations. The current government has promoted the sale of these medications as a means to facilitate abortion access without amending existing laws.
