Poland sees decline in alcohol consumption and shift in dietary habits

Recent data from CBOS and GUS indicate a significant shift in consumption habits among the Polish population. According to a CBOS study conducted in April 2026, alcohol consumption is declining. Currently, 73% of adults in Poland drink alcohol, an 8 percentage point decrease since 2019, marking the lowest level in nearly 30 years of research. Approximately 23% of respondents declare total abstinence, with 42% of the population either not drinking or avoiding alcohol-related occasions.

Key drivers for abstinence include health concerns (57%) and a lack of perceived need (51%), the latter being particularly prevalent among young adults aged 18–24. Drinking preferences are also evolving; wine (32%) has overtaken beer (30%) as the most popular choice, while vodka consumption has dropped significantly from nearly 24% two decades ago to 13% today.

Complementary data from GUS confirms a decline across all alcohol categories, including beer, wine, and spirits. Conversely, there is a notable increase in the consumption of other food products. Meat consumption has reached its highest level since at least 2010, rising to 82 kg per capita. Other increases include poultry, sugar, cereal products, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables.
