Poland sees record prenuptial agreements amid shifting marriage trends

Recent data from Statistics Poland reveals significant shifts in marriage and relationship trends within the country. In 2025, the number of marriages reached approximately 133,000, marking the lowest level since the end of World War II.

Despite the decline in total marriages, there has been a record increase in marital property agreements, commonly known as prenuptial agreements. Approximately 69,406 such agreements were recorded, representing a 35 percent increase compared to a decade ago. Experts suggest this trend is driven by a rising marriage age; as individuals marry later in life, they often enter unions with existing assets such as property, savings, and businesses.

Additionally, there is a growing preference for civil ceremonies over traditional religious weddings. More than half of engaged couples in Polish cities are opting for civil ceremonies, often favoring the flexibility of outdoor settings and the ‘slow wedding’ philosophy, which prioritizes authentic connection and intimacy over rigid, traditional protocols.
