Poland sees rising alcohol abstinence and falling excise tax revenues
Alcohol consumption in Poland is declining, with the country emerging as a leader in the European Union for rising abstinence rates. According to Eurostat data cited by Puls Biznesu, 35% of Poles declare abstinence, and only 0.5% report drinking alcohol daily, one of the lowest rates in the EU.
This shift in consumer behavior is impacting national finances. Excise tax revenues from spirits have decreased, with the treasury collecting 3.9 billion PLN by the end of June, compared to 4.5 billion PLN during the same period last year. As of mid-year, only 31% of the annual excise tax revenue target has been met.
