Poland Sejm abortion commission meeting canceled

A planned meeting of the Sejm extraordinary commission to consider abortion law projects has been canceled. The session, which was scheduled for September 14, 2026, was called off due to the lack of a position from the Ministry of Health.

The commission was intended to resume work after a hiatus of more than two years. The agenda included reviewing several legislative proposals, such as the Polski 2050 project, which aims to restore the legal status that existed prior to the 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling. This would allow for abortion in cases of severe and irreversible fetal abnormalities or incurable diseases threatening the child's life.

Opposition members, including Katarzyna Kotula and Anna Maria Żukowska, criticized the cancellation. Kotula described the move as a “highly unprofessional” and political decision by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, suggesting it was intended to avoid debate on the issue. Members of the Left parliamentary club noted that preparations were complete and a vote was expected at the upcoming session.
