Poland prepares for August 2026 celestial spectacles
Poland's sky will host several notable astronomical events in August 2026. A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the country on 12 August, with the eclipse reaching up to 80 % coverage in northern Poland. The same day a total solar eclipse will sweep a narrow corridor across eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain, lasting from about one to two minutes at any point within the path.
The Perseids meteor shower will peak on the night of 13 August. Organisers invite the public to watch the display from 21:00 at the Silesian Botanical Garden in Mikołów; entry is free and no prior registration is required. Damian Jabłeka, vice‑director of the Silesian Planetarium, will lead the event and explain the nature of the meteors.
Early August also offers a planetary parade before sunrise, allowing observers to see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune low on the eastern horizon. Mercury reaches its greatest western elongation on 2 August, providing the best viewing conditions. The month’s lunar phases include a new moon on 12 August and a full moon on 28 August, further enriching night‑time skywatching opportunities.
