Poland and Belarus foreign ministers hold first meeting in a decade
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov held an introductory meeting on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. This marks the first high-level diplomatic contact between the two nations in approximately a decade.
Sikorski described the talks as a way to discuss regional security and the situation at the shared border, noting that the border situation has stabilized due to physical barriers and the release of political prisoners, such as Andrzej Poczobut. He emphasized that while Poland is open to improving relations if Belarus shows genuine intent, the meeting does not constitute recognition of the Lukashenko regime, stating, “As a state, we recognize other states, not governments.” Poland also announced plans to open a new embassy building in Minsk.
During the same UN session, Sikorski issued a warning regarding Russian activities, stating that intelligence suggests Moscow is preparing 'something big' this year. He suggested this could involve false flag provocations to justify domestic mobilization. He also urged Belarus to prevent Russian drones and missiles from utilizing its territory for transit.
