Poland study links sugary drinks to higher hypertension risk

A long‑term U.S. cohort study of 25,749 participants found that consumption of sugar‑sweetened beverages and large amounts of fruit juice during childhood was associated with a higher risk of developing hypertension in adulthood, while whole fruit intake was not. The analysis, published in *Circulation*, highlighted that the source of fructose matters more than the total amount consumed.

A separate Polish survey from 2022 reported that 61 % of Poles regularly drink sugary beverages, with nearly one‑fifth consuming them daily. Health experts warn that such high intake contributes to obesity, type‑2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, dubbing sugary drinks a “liquid death.” Both reports underscore the need to limit liquid sources of added sugars and promote water, milk or whole fruit as healthier alternatives.
