Poland targets Big Tech with proposed digital tax

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, has announced a legislative offensive against Big Tech companies. The government aims to increase the tax burden and legal responsibility of major digital platforms operating in Poland.

A key component of this strategy is the introduction of a digital tax, which is currently undergoing inter-ministerial consultations. The proposed law, which is included in the government's work schedule, aims to take effect in 2027. It would impose a 3 percent tax on specific revenues generated in Poland by the largest digital entities, focusing on targeted advertising, user interaction platforms, and the sale of collected user data.

Beyond financial measures, the government seeks to mandate that platforms respond more swiftly and effectively to illegal content. Gawkowski noted that the initiative faces political friction, suggesting that the Presidential Palace may be influenced by industry lobbyists.
