Poland tests anti-drone cage armor on Leopard tanks
During the Czarny Obrońca military exercise held from September 14 to 24, the Polish Land, Air, and Navy forces demonstrated readiness using approximately 11,000 soldiers and 880 vehicles and weapon systems. A central focus of the maneuvers was the 11th Armored Cavalry Division, which utilized Leopard 2A4, 2A5, and 2PL main battle tanks.
In an effort to adapt to lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, Polish forces tested Leopard tanks equipped with anti-drone cage armor, often referred to as “cope cages.” While experts noted these improvised structures appear effective for certain threat scenarios, critics pointed out significant vulnerabilities. Specifically, reports from Defense Express indicated that the protective structures left critical sectors, such as the engine and gearbox areas, exposed to potential attacks.
