On September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, an event that triggered the start of World War II. Germany's military strength significantly exceeded Poland's, deploying approximately 1.85 million soldiers, 2,800 tanks, and 2,000 aircraft, compared to Poland's 950,000 soldiers and 700 tanks. The conflict was further complicated by the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a non-aggression agreement between Germany and the Soviet Union that included a secret protocol to partition Polish territory. Following the initial German onslaught, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east on September 17, 1939.

The war resulted in massive casualties, with Poland losing approximately 6 million citizens, the majority of whom were civilians. The invasion led to years of occupation, terror, and systemic destruction across the region.
