Poland to be reclassified as a developed market by S&P DJI
S&P Dow Jones Indices has decided to reclassify Poland from an emerging market to a developed market. The change is scheduled to take effect in September 2027 following the index updates.
Polish Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Domański described the decision as a confirmation of the country's growing economic position, noting that Poland is currently the fastest-growing large economy in the EU. Tomasz Bardziłowski, President of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW), stated that the move reflects the maturity of the Polish capital market and the ongoing efforts to strengthen market fundamentals, such as increasing liquidity and the scale of companies available to global investors.
The reclassification is expected to offer several long-term benefits, including a reduction in the cost of capital for Polish companies as investors may require a lower risk premium. It also expands the pool of potential buyers to include funds with mandates restricted to developed markets. However, experts note that Poland's weight in the S&P Developed BMI is estimated to be relatively small, between 0.10% and 0.15%, compared to its current 1.5% weight in the Emerging BMI.
