Poland to develop Krab 2 howitzer using combat lessons from Ukraine

Poland is developing the Krab 2, an upgraded version of its Krab self-propelled howitzer designed to incorporate combat lessons learned from the war in Ukraine. The new model aims to set a technological standard for Polish artillery and enhance the country's defense industry export potential.

Key technical improvements for the Krab 2 include the introduction of an automatic loading system to reduce crew workload and increase firing rates. The design will also feature a reinforced barrel capable of handling higher pressure to extend firing range. Additionally, the system is expected to include a remotely controlled armament module and active soft-kill protection systems, such as the Polish C-Obra and the German Rheinmetall ROSY (Rapid Obscuring System).

Production of the Krab 2 is anticipated to begin within this decade. As part of a larger procurement plan, Poland ordered 48 Krab 2 units in 2024 as part of a contract for 96 tracked self-propelled guns.
