Poland to ease air defense rules after Russian airspace violation

Poland is easing its rules of engagement for air defense following a recent violation of its airspace by a Russian Mil Mi-8 helicopter. The aircraft, originating from Kaliningrad, briefly entered Polish airspace near Braniewo on September 23. Polish operational command reported that the helicopter was tracked by radar and fighter jets were placed on alert.

This incident follows a pattern of Russian military provocations near the Polish border, including previous drone incursions and missile incidents since the start of the war in Ukraine. In response to these ongoing threats, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk stated that procedures must adapt so that pilots can act with confidence and certainty of state support. The new rules will move away from requiring visual identification, instead allowing for action based on “positive” identification of a threat.

Public sentiment in Poland reflects the heightened tension. A recent poll indicates that a majority of citizens (56.3%) believe the national security council should be convened in response to recent Russian military provocations.
