Poland to establish Dron Legion for civilian drone operators

Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, has announced the creation of the ‘Dron Legion’. This new initiative aims to integrate certified civilian drone operators into the national defense strategy to support the Polish Armed Forces in the event of a conflict.

Unlike traditional military units, the Dron Legion will consist of non-professional personnel, including civil defense and volunteer firefighters, who possess official drone operator certifications. The initiative is inspired by combat experiences observed in Ukraine. Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that every squad in the Polish military should be equipped with drones and possess operational capabilities.

The 25th Air Cavalry Brigade in Nowy Glinnik will serve as a central hub for cyclic training and certification exercises, such as the ‘Blue Eye 2026’ program. Next year, approximately 33,000 students from 500 military schools are expected to undergo drone training, concluding with examinations conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority (ULC).

Infrastructure development is supported by a 26 billion PLN investment program through 2026, which includes the establishment of drone laboratories. The newly formed Unmanned Forces Inspectorate will oversee the integration of reconnaissance and strike systems. Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak noted that while Poland currently has over 560,000 certified drone operators, the project will continue to expand these resources through cooperation between the ULC and the Ministry of Defense.
